Acanthussen zijn statige planten met lange bloemaren en sterk getand of gelobd blad. De meeste in Europa toegepaste soorten zijn afkomstig uit het Mediterrane gebied. Ze hebben allen een rijke en vooral goed doorlatende bodem nodig. Dit komt hun winterhardheid ten goede.
