Humulus is een sterkgroeiende slingerplant, die ook in het wild voorkomt. Alleen de vrouwelijke planten van Humulus krijgen de bekende hopbellen, die gebruikt worden bij de bereiding van bier. Er zijn soorten die speciaal voor die toepassing zijn gekweekt. Er is ook Humulus met blad dat in het voorjaar fraai geelgroen is. Deze laatste soort groeit ook wat rustiger en is daardoor beter geschikt voor de kleinere tuin. De meeste soorten Humulus hebben ruimte nodig.
